The minister of state for ethics and intergrity, Lilly Akello Rose has said that her ministry together with the ministry of education and sports and other partners are in advanced stages of providing long lasting solution to the increasing immoral practices in Ugandan schools.
“The directorate of ethics and intergrity together with the Ministry of education and sports, Family Life Network, Rising Star Foundation, Centre for lifelong Learning Makerere..have embarked on implementing a value based program to rebuild ethics and integrity in society,” said minister Akello.
She made remarks on Thursday while addressing journalists on the actions to be taken on Students and School Administration in light of the Lubiri High School video at Media Centre in Kampala.
The programme is targeting learners in primary and secondary schools in Uganda.
“The programme aims at providing right information, guidance and counselling to the youth in primary and secondary schools on the prevailing dangers of drug abuse, sexual immortality, pornography and corruption among others,” she said
She added that these programmes are embedded in the National Ethical Values of Uganda to inculcate the culture of integrity in society.
This follows the recent video that awashed social media inwhich learners of Lubiri High School aboard the school bus belonging to Midland High School Kampala school were caught on video doing what seemed sexual and erotic dances. The video was first purported to Midland High School but it was later realized that the occupants were students of Lubiri High School which had hired the bus to transport learners to an Agriculture study tour in Jinja. This aroused trauma in the public domain questioning the moral values schools are nowadays instilling to students.
Earlier today, minister Akello disclosed; “I have visited Lubiri High School to hear their side of the story.”
The minister however, did not divulge to details of her visit to Lubiri High School. She stated that government is concerned about moral decadences in schools which she says undermines learnerss’ academic performances.
“On behalf of government, I would like to to strongly condemn any act that underminesthe good image of government and Ugandan society.”
In addition, she blames rampant immoral practices among young people on exposure to false information on sexuality, pornographic contents like videos and graphic images, general moral degeneration, lack of proper guidance among others.
She has asked religious and traditional leaders and the public to guide children and the youth to keep good moral conduct in order to groom them into responsible citizens.
