The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has strongly condemned the recent brawl among Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA) councilors over the city’s solid waste management crisis.
Last week, chaos erupted during a council sitting when the National Unity Platform (NUP) councilors demanded an apology from the council leadership for delaying the presentation of a comprehensive report on the garbage crisis.
John Kikonyogo, FDC Spokesperson said at a media briefing on Monday that the people of Kampala need solutions, not reports, to address the garbage issue that has plagued the city. He criticized the councilors for prioritizing fights over finding ways to manage solid waste.
Kikonyogo also drew parallels with the tenure of former Kampala City Mayor Christopher Iga (1989-1997), notorious for his handling of a cholera outbreak, warning of a potential repeat in City Lowlands.
Kampala city still struggles to dispose of only 40-50% of the estimated 1,500 tons of waste generated daily. City streets and outskirts are filled with heaps of garbages following government’s closure of Kiteezi landfill after a deadly collapse that claimed 35 lives, damaged property, crops and animals.
FDC has appealed to the relevant authorities to urgently address the escalating garbage crisis in Kampala to prevent potential disaster from future occurrences.
