The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has called upon the Uganda Human Rights Commission and other Human Rights Defenders to come out strongly against acts of human rights violations and holding the perpetuators to book.
The statement was made today morning by the FDC Deputy Publicity Secretary John Kikonyogo during the weekly press briefing at the party headquarters in Najjanankumbi.
Kikonyogo said that for the past months, heightened drone abductions that are politically motivated have been on a rise by people assumed to be coming from security forces.
He added that the abductions unfortunately target political actors and activists across the country who are majorly from the opposition.
“Last week saw the abduction of Joseph Kabuleta, by security personnel from his NEED platform and taken to unknown place and later charges of sectarianism slapped on him by the courts of law,” he noted.
Police on November 28 arrested Kabuleta the leader of the National Economic Empowerment Dialogue (NEED) party for failing to honor their summons issued to him over alleged reckless remarks.
He was arrested from the party head offices in Bugolobi, Kampala, shortly after conducting his weekly press conference, and whisked away by men dressed in civilian clothes.
By press time, Parrots UG had learned that the Uganda Human Rights Commission had dispatched a team to ascertain whether the one-time presidential candidate was in good health and confirm if his rights were not violated while in custody.
Ms. Ruth Ssekindi, the director of monitoring and inspections at Uganda Human Rights Commission revealed the visit as she quashed social media reports that Mr. Kabuleta had been denied access to his lawyers and medical team, saying that he had full access to his team while in detention.
