Former Uganda Cranes Player turned Coach, Barnabas Mwesiga has passed on, FUFA announced.
“The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has learnt with deep sorrow about the death of celebrated Coach Barnabas Mwesiga,” FUFA posted on social media.
Mwesiga was among the squad that beat Congo Brazaville 3-1opening ground match in the 1978 Nations Cup (AfCON) and led Uganda Cranes to the final of the tournament.
Throughout his football career, Mwesigye also won the Uganda Cup with Nsambya FC in 1978 and lifted the CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup with Uganda Cranes in 1973 and1977.
According to records at FUFA, he coached Uganda Cranes from 1985 to 1988.
He also played for Nsambya FC, Kilembe FC and Mbarara FC. His club coaching journey took him to Kilembe Fc, Mbarara FC, Nsambya FC, Dairy FC, KCC FC and Coffee FC.
He also extended his coaching and leadership skills through the Sports Outreach Ministry (a Christian NGO) dealing with the youth in sports.
FUFA has described Mwesiga’s death as the loss of a legend who served football wholeheartedly.
“FUFA believes in Mwesiga’s contribution to the game of football which served unconditionally as a player, coach and administrator,” the football regulatory body eulogized.
The cause of coach Mwesiga’s death is not yet known. More details to follow
