The state Anti-corruption court has sentenced to five years imprisonment, former Yumbe district police commander, SP Geoffrey Leo Ogwok, after being found guilty of embezzling sh6m meant for payment of allowances for security guards.
The Anti-Corruption Court Principal Magistrate Grade One, Moses Nabende, further banned him from holding a public office for 10 years.
“This is to authorise the police officer to be received in Prison together with the warrant. Carry out the aforesaid sentence into execution according to law,” Nabende ruled.
The magistrate ruled that prosecution adduced sufficient proof that the accused stole the money.
Although the senior police officer acknowledged receipt of the funds but alleges to have passed it to the line officers for the payment to the officers, the magistrate said none of the line officers was presented by the accused.
Prosecutions says that between February 2012 and May 2014 in Yumbe district, Ogwok being employed in Public Service was charged with the management of sh6m meant for payment of allowances for security guards.
Prosecution, however, states that Ogwok knowingly furnished false accountability, embezzled the money and abused his office while performing his duties.
