Police in Kampala is investigating an incident where two security guards allegedly made off with Shs1.5 billion from a bullion van they were escorting. According to Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, the two guards, employed by G4S, were tasked with transporting cash from Lubowa to Nakasero.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the guards conspired to rob the bullion van, which had the registration number UAJ 199T. The van was later found abandoned in Nabunya, Rubaga Division, alongside two rifles.
The guards reportedly stole Shs1.06 billion in Ugandan shillings and an additional $14,474, bringing the total to more than Shs1.5 billion. Following a report of the robbery, police investigations led to the arrest of Richard Ambrose Otim in Kwania district, where he was found with Shs117 million suspected to be part of the stolen money.
Owoyesigyire confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and further details will be disclosed as they become available.
