The body of a 46-year-old black man whose death under the knee of a Minneapolis police officer during an arrest galvanized a nation to take to the streets in protest arrived back in Houston, where he grew up, early Sunday.
“George Floyd and his family are safely in Houston,” tweeted Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo.
George Floyd, an African American was murdered murdered on May25th by a White police officer in Minneapolis, USA.
Derek Chauvin, a police officer who kneeled on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, even after he had stopped moving, has since been fired from work and charged with second-degree murder. The three officers who stood by are charged with aiding and abetting.
Art Acevedo, Houston Police Chief said that there will be a public viewing on Monday, with thousands expected to attend.
Further information reveal that Floyd was a sportsman, he for instance helped bring his Yates High School football team in Houston in Third Ward where he grew up to the Texas state championships,
In order to widen his opportunities, he moved to Minneapolis in 2017, hoping to cast nests wider in lobbying for his football team. However, his dream was brought to an end as Chauvin blown off a light to his life.
Houston Police Chief stated that due to social distancing requirements caused by the ongoing covid-19 pandemic, only 15 mourners will be allowed inside the church at a time. He added thst all attendees must wear gloves and masks to enter Tuesday’s private funeral.
Protests however are still ongoing in the US and by press time, it had spread to other states outside the US such as those in the UK.
