The government of Uganda has again extended the administrative term of office for Local Council 1 and 2 that was expiring on January 5.
Hon. Raphael Magyezi, minister of local governments said the extension will run for a period not exceeding one hundred and eighty (180) days.
“The local government act under regulation 11A of the local government council regulations extended the term of office of administrative unit councils that was expiring on 5th January, 2024 to a period not exceeding one hundred and eighty days from 6th January, 2024,” said minister Magyezi.
The minister was addressing journalists at Uganda Media Centre on January 3.
This is a second time government extends the tenure of LC1 and 2 office bearers, which expired on July 10, 2023, but was extended to six months until January 5, 2024, which has again been extended.
According to Minister Magyezi, the decision has been dictated by inadequate funding and other logistics to carry out the elections.
He said government requires 59 billion shillings to organize both the local council and women council elections in the country.
