The Ministry of Health has called for stronger collaboration between the government and non-governmental stakeholders to enhance condom production and distribution as a key strategy in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Speaking at the launch of FLAME condoms by Marie Stopes Uganda at Noni Vie Restaurant, Lugogo, the Director General of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Charles Olaro, noted that Uganda continues to grapple with rising HIV infections, particularly among young people. He emphasized the need for joint efforts to increase awareness and accessibility of condoms across the country.
“The introduction of FLAME condoms is a significant contribution to Uganda’s National Comprehensive Condom Programming Strategy,” Dr. Olaro said. “This initiative aligns with government efforts and those of health partners to reduce HIV prevalence and promote reproductive health across Uganda.”
Marie Stopes Uganda Country Director, Dr. Peter Ddungu, raised concerns over the decline in donor funding for HIV programs, warning that the gap could negatively impact prevention efforts. He urged young people to take personal responsibility for their sexual health and unplanned pregnancies.
“As donor funding decreases, it is crucial that individuals, especially the youth, prioritize safe sex practices,” Dr. Ddungu stated. “Public education on condom use and its benefits must be reinforced to ensure communities remain protected.”
The launch of FLAME condoms is expected to contribute to ongoing national efforts to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS, particularly among vulnerable groups. The Ministry of Health, alongside partners like Marie Stopes Uganda, continues to advocate for increased access to sexual health resources to strengthen Uganda’s fight against the epidemic.
