RUKUNGIRI
On March 6, 2025, the community of Rotooma Nyarushanje Sub-county came together to honor the life and legacy of Thomas Byabagambi, a retired headteacher and esteemed teacher of English and Literature. Byabagambi, who passed away at the age of 77, was laid to rest at his home, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to education and community service.
Born in 1948, Byabagambi rose from humble beginnings to achieve academic excellence, earning a bachelor’s degree and a postgraduate diploma from Makerere University. His career as an educator spanned several schools, including Immaculate Girl’s Senior Secondary School in Rukungiri, where his impact was deeply felt.
Fr. Kasigaire Elias, the parish priest of Nyarushanje, praised Byabagambi’s tireless efforts in transforming schools and serving the Catholic Church. Even in his final moments, Byabagambi demonstrated his unwavering commitment to his faith, instructing his wife to donate UGX 200,000 to support the completion of the local church.

Kabazamu Francis, Byabagambi’s elder brother, shared heartfelt memories of his sibling’s selflessness. Raised by Francis, Byabagambi never showed disrespect and delayed his own marriage to ensure his siblings received an education. In a touching gesture of gratitude, Byabagambi later sponsored Francis’s wedding reception.
Hon. Mary Paula Turyahikayo, former Member of Parliament for Rubabo Constituency, recounted Byabagambi’s exceptional teaching methods. She shared a story of how his strict grading initially sparked unrest among students, only for them to later excel under his guidance. Turyahikayo lauded Byabagambi for his developmental mindset and his dedication to educating children from underprivileged backgrounds.
Paula also urged politicians to avoid politics of hate noting that this hinders development of their area.
As the community bid farewell to a man who touched countless lives, the legacy of Thomas Byabagambi as a transformative educator and compassionate leader will undoubtedly endure.
