Police in Kanungu on orders of the Resident District Commissioner Shafiq Ssekandi, has besieged Great Lakes University following unresolved conflicts between the institution’s founder Dr. Hamlet Mbabazi Kabushenga and the University administration led by Honest Wilkins Natukwasa, the current University Director.
The rows which started coldly shoot up last week when the university issued a statement warning the public not to deal or do any transactions with Kabushenga whom they said is a masquarader and no longer represents the institution.
Founded in 2004, Great Lakes University founders, Child to Family Community Development Organization (CHIFCOD), in June last year ordered Kabushenga to resign on allegations of mismanagement of funds.
On September 25, 2021, Kabushenga reportedly submitted in his resignation letter to the University council chairperson Joan Turyamwebarize. But he soon on Saturday last week made a U-turn declaring himself a founder and chancellor of the university.
It is reported that Kabushenga together with some unidentified bouncers stormed the University campus at Bushuura village, Kirima sub county along Kihihi-Kanungu road chasing away students who had reported to prepare for Monday’s official reporting.
Kabushenga further ordered for the sacking of the University Vice Chancellor, Dorothy Kabugho and appointed the Kanungu town council mayor Godfrey Tumwebaze Karabenda, to chairman Board of Trustees.
When contacted for a comment, Natukwatsa, the Director said that Kabushenga is fraudster who should not come to university premises. She added that the university Dr. Holga Halter Liso, a German national as a chancellor.
The acting VC Kabugho accused Kabushenga of storming university premises with unknown people manned with pangas, sticks to distablize the peace of the university.
However, Kabushenga dismissed the accusations as baseless allegations backfiring at them that they are impersonators who enchroached on his land.
The Chairman Board of Trustees, Karabenda says Kabushenga should not be sidelined sibce the University sits on his land and other operations of CHIFCOD.
Riat Asiimwe, the students Guild President suggests for a peaceful talk between the administration and Kabushenga to resolve the issues effectively so as they are do not interfere with students’ academic studies.
