KALANGALA
Three candidates have been nominated to contest in the Kalangala District woman MP by-election on the first day of the nomination exercise.
The candidates are Irene Nampala of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Aidah Nabayiga of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), and independent candidate Flavia Nagawa.
The Electoral Commission (EC) started the nomination exercise on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, and it will close today, Thursday, June 11, at 5pm.
EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said the commission successfully nominated three candidates on the first day and will announce the final list of candidates after the exercise closes.
“Yesterday, on the first day of nominations, the Electoral Commission successfully nominated three candidates to participate in the by-election for the Kalangala District woman representative seat,” Mucunguzi said.
The seat fell vacant following the death of former Kalangala woman MP Hellen Nakimuli, who passed away in a Kampala hospital after undergoing minor surgeries.
The EC has set June 24, 2026, as the polling date for the by-election.
Mucunguzi said after nominations, the commission will meet the successfully nominated candidates and their agents to agree on the campaign programme before campaigns begin.
He urged candidates and their supporters to follow electoral guidelines and laws during the nomination process. He advised candidates to ensure their nomination papers are properly filled and all requirements are met to avoid confusion.
