KAMPALA
Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has contracted nine private waste collectors to boost garbage collection and evacuation across the city ahead of the National Cleaning Day scheduled for August 29, 2026.
The move is part of measures being implemented following guidance from Government communicated by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja during a meeting held on August 12, according to KCCA executive director Hajjati Sharifah Buzeki.
Buzeki said the nine companies have been distributed across the nine constituencies of Kampala to strengthen waste collection and ensure garbage is evacuated in a timely manner.
Eight of the contracted firms have already obtained operational permits from KCCA and have a combined capacity to collect 1,469 tonnes of waste per day.
The ninth collector is expected to contribute an additional 200 tonnes daily.
The private collectors will complement KCCA’s existing waste evacuation capacity of about 500 tonnes per day.
Kampala generates between 2,000 and 2,500 tonnes of waste every day, according to KCCA, creating a significant burden on the city’s waste management system.
The additional collection capacity is expected to help KCCA handle the increased volume of waste generated during the National Cleaning Day exercise.
Government has also supported the waste management efforts by providing funds for the initial procurement of 10 new garbage trucks.
The funds will also support Phase One of the development of a waste management facility at Buyala in the 2026/2027 financial year.
The facility is intended to facilitate material recovery and waste repurposing as part of broader efforts to improve waste management in Kampala.
The National Cleaning Day will be held on Saturday, August 29, with residents and other stakeholders expected to participate in cleaning public spaces across the city.
