Mitooma District Woman MP aspirant Rebecca Kyarampe Namanya is steadily gaining ground in the ongoing National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries, positioning herself as a strong contender against incumbent MP Juliet Agasha Bashiisha.
Kyarampe, who is contesting for the third consecutive time, is seeking to unseat Bashiisha, who is serving her first term in Parliament and is vying for re-election.
On July 4, Kyarampe received a rousing welcome in Kabira Town Council, where jubilant supporters laid out a red-carpet cloth, lifted her shoulder-high, and cut a celebratory cake in her honour.
Meanwhile, Bashiisha continues to campaign in a bid to retain her seat, but is facing growing discontent from sections of the electorate who accuse her of incompetence and poor service delivery.
“She has been there for five years, but our water and electricity issues remain unresolved. We need a change, not leaders who only show up during elections,” said Jacinta Birungi, a resident of Kabira.
Similar scenes of enthusiastic support for Kyarampe have been witnessed in Ruhinda South, Ruhinda North, and Ruhinda counties, where crowds have turned up during joint campaign events, chanting and singing her name.
Other contestants in the election are Dr. Rosebell Twinomujuni and Faith Kyohairwe, both first time contenders.
