The assignment was made under the powers granted by Article 133 of the Constitution and Section 3(a) of the Administration of the Judiciary Act. As Acting Principal Judge, Lady Justice Okuo Kajuga will work closely with the Chief Justice to oversee the High Court and subordinate courts across the country, ensuring the efficient administration of justice until a substantive Principal Judge is appointed.

The Chief Justice lauded her qualifications and commitment to justice, congratulating her on the new assignment and expressing confidence in her ability to uphold the Judiciary’s dedication to institutional leadership and improved access to justice for all Ugandans.

A Distinguished Career

Appointed a Judge of the High Court in 2019, Lady Justice Okuo Kajuga has distinguished herself in the Anti-Corruption Division, where she serves as Deputy Head. Her tenure has been marked by diligence, integrity, and a strong commitment to combating corruption through the resolution of complex and high-profile cases.

Her leadership extends beyond the courtroom. In 2020, she was tasked with leading the implementation of the Judiciary’s Plea Bargain programme, a transformative initiative promoting the expeditious and cost-effective resolution of criminal cases. She is also an advocate for Alternative Dispute Resolution and serves as a court-accredited mediator at the Family Division of the High Court.

Prior to joining the Bench, Lady Justice Okuo Kajuga had an illustrious 20-year career at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), where she rose to the rank of Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions. She was a trailblazer, serving as the first spokesperson of the ODPP for over 14 years while successfully managing high-profile prosecutions.

Lady Justice Okuo Kajuga’s appointment reflects a commitment to strong institutional leadership and enhancing justice delivery in Uganda. Her extensive experience and exemplary service are expected to bring stability and innovative solutions to the Judiciary during her tenure as Acting Principal Judge.
