MASAKA: A Landlord in Masaka district has set a blaze his house after tenant defaulted to pay his monthly rent worth Shs 40,000/=.
Amos Ssuubi,23 years is nursing wounds at the hospital in Masaka after his Landlord burned the house in which he was resting.
Bruno, a resident of Ssenyange Village, in Nyendo Division Masaka district has been arrested for burning his house claiming that the tenant failed to clear his rent fees.
Further reports indicate that Bruno (the Landlord) is a security personnel in the reserve force.
Mr Ssuubi, the tenant said that he had paid his Landlord money for the month of May which he (Landlord) denies.
Mr Ssuubi’s neighbor’s said that Bruno has a tendency of collecting rent fares from tenants and later after getting drunk comes back to demand for the same money.
He added that he has recorded audio tapes in which the landlord had been threatening to burn him a case he had earlier reported to the Chairperson LC1.
Herman Ssentongo, the RDC Masaka district confirmed the arrest of the Landlord urging other landlords to comply to Presidential directives of not evicting tenants due to rent arrears in this COVID-19 pandemic.
President Museveni had earlier cautioned Landlords to keep patient and not to evict any tenant due to rent defaults in this COVID-19 situation.
However, these are seemingly over patient and have started threatening to evict tenants out of their rentals arguing that government doesn’t cater for their livelihoods.
