The Commanding Officer of the 29th Infantry Battalion, Maj. Walter Olumu has called on Ugandan students to embrace patriotism, discipline, and national values as a foundation for the country’s future development.
Officiating at the closing ceremony of a four-day patriotism training at Kirugu Secondary School in Rubirizi District, Maj. Olumu urged participants to uphold the core principles of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) which are patriotism, Pan-Africanism, socio-economic transformation, and democracy.
“Students must build a spirit of love, unity, self-discipline, and passion for their nation,” he said. “Avoid idleness and behavior that can destroy your future. The country depends on your character and commitment.”
Over 500 students from Kirugu Secondary School in Rubirizi District recently completed a four-day intensive patriotism training aimed at instilling national values and promoting responsible citizenship among youth.
The training was conducted at the school playground, covering topics on leadership, political economy, Uganda’s history, and the importance of national sacrifice.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Kuriga SS Headmistress Asenath Bamureeba Osiime said the training had improved student behavior, academic focus, and school discipline.
“Our students are more focused, disciplined, and have developed a greater love for their school,” she said.
Additionally, Rubirizi District Sports Officer Suna Akim called for the formation of patriotism clubs in all schools, highlighting their role in reinforcing discipline, teamwork, and national identity.
Student participants echoed Maj. Olumu’s message. Amos Naturinda, one of the trainees, said the program taught him leadership, hard work, and the value of serving one’s community. “It changed our mindset and made us more responsible,” he said.
