KAMPALA: Police from Kampala Central Police Station have arrested and detained Makerere University Guild President, Ivan Ssempijja and some of his cabinet ministers.
The Guild President and his team were walking to the Ministry of Education and Sports to file a petition about the fixer fees deducted from the students despite not being at the University.
They were however intercepted by police and arrested at the independence monument along Parliamentary Avenue in Kampala before reaching to the ministry headquarters.
According to the petition, the students had raised numerous grievances which include; the reversal of functional fees for students during the COVID Pandemic, reversal of 12% internet tax to facilitate ease of accessibility to learning.
The student leaders wanted a halt of the 15% cumulative tuition increment policy and a comprehensive plan for full reopening of University for physical learning to continue, including a clear plan for mass vaccination of students.
Roy Rugumayo, one of the students who talked to this report said means to get the detained students released unconditionally are underway.
“We are currently trying to ensure that we get their unconditional release, allow them reach the Ministry of Education to deliver the petition,” says Roy Rugumayo, one of the students.
The leaders are currently being detained at the Central Police Station in Kampala.
The leaders, last week addressed the media on a number of issues, amongst which was a demand to waive the functional fees at the university since all students are studying online during the pandemic.
