Makerere University has made the first step on the process to evict vendors illegally operating within the university premises.
The evictions Wich started on Friday November 10th, 2023 follow numerous concerns raised by students.
Last year, the university council passed a resolution to evict vendors but implementation of the resolution has been pending after the affected vendors sought remedy from court.
The court then issued an injunction to stop the process which was paused only to resume this year.
Furthermore, enforcement of the eviction was also expected to start two months ago but it was delayed after the university failed to release funds to facilitate the process.
Insiders revealed that the funds were released a day earlier prompting the university real estate to start on implementation of the eviction order.
Several businesses such as canteens within the different halls of residence, printing kiosks and roadside vending have been affected by this order.
Last month, the University Guild President, Maseruka Robert wrote to the vice chancellor requesting him to halt the eviction till alternatives are put in place.
Maseruka claimed that some of these people such as canteen operators had been giving food items to students at cost friendly prices and on loan whenever they are out of cash. He said the eviction is unfair to students who cannot afford to purchase from shops outside the university premises.
However, his demands fell in deaf ears of the Vice Chancellor as implementation of the process started today.
