A man was killed in a mob attack on Sunday, in Awilabongo village, Amun Parish, Apoi sub-county, Apac district after being accused of stealing a cow.
Police preliminary reports indicate that Patrick Okello (the deceased) was apprehended by members of the local community at around 6pm on Sunday who beat him to death on suspicion of theft.
The report was filed by Moses Bongonyinge, the LC2 Chairman of Amun Parish.
The North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, SP John Patrick Okema confirmed this report noting that three suspects have so far been arrested in connection with the brutal killing.
“Three suspects have been arrested and are currently in police custody,” SP Okema said.
The suspects are; Denis Akaki 17, Walter Okello 36, and Ambrose Opeto 26, all residents of Awilabongo Village.
Police from Apac Central Police Station and a team of homicide investigators visited the scene of crime and conducted a full investigation at the scene. A postmortem was conducted before the body was handed over to the deceased’s relatives for burial.
“We strongly condemn acts of mob justice. No one has the right to take the law into their own hands. This behavior is a direct violation of Article 22 of the constitution of the Republic of Uganda,” said SP Okema.
He assured the residents that police will ensure that Okello’s family receives justice.
