The much-anticipated opening of the renovated bridge in Katete took place today, January 7, 2023, marking a significant milestone for the local community and enhancing connectivity within Mbarara City.
There was a strong emphasis on the importance of infrastructure development for economic growth and community empowerment.
The Resident City Commissioner (RCC), Mrs. Catherine Kamwiine Hellen, thanked all leaders for their active support and advocacy, noting that it was a combined effort from the L.C 1 chairperson to the Members of Parliament.
“It is not yet the desired bridge, but there is a plan in the pipeline for a better one. So, protect and take care of this bridge as you wait for the bigger one,” she said.
Mayor Kachebezi expressed gratitude to all stakeholders involved in the project, highlighting how the bridge will serve as a vital link for residents, facilitating easier access to transportation and trade.
“This bridge is not just a structure; it is a symbol of progress and unity for our community. It will enhance local businesses,” he stated.
The RCC also spoke, underscoring the bridge’s role in improving safety for pedestrians and motorists alike.
“The government is committed to investing in infrastructure that meets the needs of our citizens. This bridge will significantly reduce travel time and contribute to the overall development of Mbarara City,” she noted.
Community members attended the ceremony in large numbers, celebrating together. Local leaders emphasized that the bridge will not only improve transportation but will also foster community cohesion and development.
The L.C 1 chairperson of Katete, Mr. Zanafa Eric Williams, thanked the UPDF for their efficient and quick work. He noted that the bridge is used by Rwanda and Tanzania through Insigiro.
The ceremony was graced by Mayor Kachebezi, the RCC of Mbarara City, the City Town Clerk, the City Engineer Eng. Mugisha Hillary, the UPDF Construction Brigade team led by Maj. Francis Mugasira, the legal officer, among others.
The new bridge is expected to facilitate better access to schools, healthcare, and markets, ultimately improving the quality of life for residents in Katete and surrounding areas.
