The minister of gender, labour and social, Hon. Betty Among Ongom has said that women and men should equally share their wealth and property.
She made the remarks while officiating at the launch of Women Economic Empowerment Initiative at Mestil Hotel Nsambya Kampala yesterday.
WEEI program is an initiative of Uganda Banker’s Association (UBA) which will serve as a focal point to address the myriad of issues that hinder the progress of women in the financial sector, professional setting and ultimately women entrepreneurs
Speaking at the launch, minister Amongi called on women to form and join lobby groups so as to be able to gain financial empowerment from the government.
She highlighted the need for banks to provide conducive lending environment to women such as giving out soft loans with low interest rates because they (banks) are powerful tools in the hands of women who are determined to take more control over their lives. She said empowering the youth and women will greatly prevent anti-social behavior such as drug and substance abuse.
The deputy Bank of Uganda Governor, Dr. Micheal Atingi – Ego said banks are prioritizing gender equality and financial inclusion stating that women are now holding big positions in the banking sector.
“More women secure leadership roles, but top-tier positions still lack representation. Ongoing efforts are crucial to promote women into leadership across sectors,” Dr. Michael Ating-Ego said.
Patricia Amito Lutwama, head of Communication and Corporate Affairs at Uganda Bankers’ Association said women are the backbone of the family and a bedrock of a nation recognizing their role towards national development. Lutwama reported that UBA is achieving its realization on promoting gender-inclusive finance calling for more support for women.
