The National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders Uganda (NCHRD-U) has strongly condemned the recent threats made against Dr. Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, a prominent advocate for accountability, justice, and human rights. The organization expressed deep concern over the intimidation faced by Dr. Ssentongo, emphasizing that such actions undermine democracy and the rule of law.
In a statement released by the NCHRD-U, they highlighted the importance of human rights defenders in upholding fundamental principles and values in society. They stressed that any attempts to silence or harass these defenders are not only a violation of constitutional rights but also a threat to civil society as a whole.
The NCHRD-U called upon authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the threats against Dr. Ssentongo and to ensure the safety and protection of all targeted individuals. They also urged the international community and human rights organizations to show solidarity with Dr. Ssentongo and other activists facing similar challenges.
Robert R. Kirenga, the Executive Director of NCHRD-U, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting and protecting human rights defenders in Uganda. He emphasized their dedication to promoting a more just, equitable, and rights-respecting society.
The NCHRD-U concluded their statement by emphasizing their unwavering dedication to the cause of human rights, proclaiming their commitment “for God and Country.”
