In a recent statement issued by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE), it has come to light that Victoria University has been operating an unaccredited Bachelor of Pharmacy program. This revelation has caused concern among both students and the academic community.
The Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 clearly stipulates that no person or institution can operate a university or other tertiary institution without the prior accreditation of its academic and professional programs by the NCHE. The act goes on to state that qualifications obtained from unaccredited programs will not be recognized by the council.
The Pharmaceutical Society of Uganda was the first to bring this matter to the attention of the NCHE. Following their report, investigations were conducted, which confirmed the validity of their claims. Professor Mary J. N. Okwakol, the Executive Director of NCHE, has taken swift action by issuing a formal notice to Victoria University.
This notice demands that the university immediately ceases all advertising, admission, and teaching of their unaccredited Bachelor of Pharmacy program. Failure to comply with this directive may result in serious consequences for the institution.
It is crucial to underscore the significance of accreditation in higher education. Accreditation ensures that programs meet certain standards of quality and excellence. By operating an unaccredited program, Victoria University has not only compromised the educational experience of its students, but it has also violated the trust placed in academic institutions by the public.
In response to this situation, the NCHE has called upon Victoria University to rectify its actions promptly and engage in dialogue to address this issue. The council emphasizes that education is a vital pillar of society and must be upheld with the utmost integrity and accountability.
The National Council for Higher Education has pledged to continue monitoring the situation and take appropriate action to ensure compliance with the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act. It is expected that Victoria University will take swift action in response to the notice and work towards obtaining the necessary accreditation for its Bachelor of Pharmacy program.
