SOROTI
The National Drug Authority (NDA) has wrapped up a sweeping week-long enforcement operation targeting illegal drug outlets across Uganda’s North Eastern Region, resulting in the closure of over 20 drug outlets and the arrest of five individuals operating without valid licenses.
The crackdown spanned Soroti, Ngora, Bukedea, Kaberamaido, and Moroto districts, where NDA officials impounded more than 200 boxes of assorted medicines valued at over UGX 100 million. Among the closed establishments were five pharmacies found in violation of the National Drug Policy and Authority Act, Cap 198, confirmed Rwamwiri.
According to Abiaz Rwamwiri the Authority spokesperson, unauthorized drug sales pose serious threats to public health. “Drugs dispensed by unqualified personnel, stored improperly, or used irrationally can lead to antimicrobial resistance, treatment failures, and adverse reactions,” the Authority warned in a statement.
The arrests were made under Section 14(3) of the Act, which prohibits the practice of pharmacy without a valid license. NDA emphasized that such operations undermine drug regulation and endanger lives.
The enforcement aligns with NDA’s mandate to regulate human and animal medicines and healthcare products. The Authority urged operators whose drugs were impounded to visit the North Eastern regional office in Soroti City for compliance guidance and possible reclamation of their stock.
NDA has directed all unlicensed drug sellers to immediately halt operations and comply with legal requirements. Citizens are encouraged to purchase medicines only from licensed pharmacies and drug shops and to report suspicious drug-related activities via NDA’s toll-free line 0800 101 999 or WhatsApp 0740 002 070.
The Authority reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health, reminding Ugandans that “Safe Drugs Save Lives.”
