Police in Ntungamo district is investigating a fatal accident on the Ntungamo-Kabale road that resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left two others critically injured.
The accident involved a box body truck, registration number UBN 667W, driven by an unidentified driver, and two motorcycles: a Bajaj boxer, registration number UFQ 805K, ridden by an individual named Ezra with his passenger Dezi Karambuzi, and a Senke motorcycle, registration number UDM 671K, ridden by an unknown individual.
Eyewitness Mr. Clinton Birugwomuriwe reported that the accident occurred near the Rubaare traffic checkpoint. He identified the deceased as Ezra, a resident of Nyakagongo Cell and a boda boda rider at Omungyenyi stage, and Dezi Karambuzi, from Kyamugashe II Cell, Rwemiyaga Ward, Rwenanuura-Kakukuru Town Council, who was the LC I Vice Chairperson.
The two injured individuals were promptly rushed to Doctors’ Referral Hospital in Rubaare Town Council by the traffic police to save their lives. The bodies of the deceased were taken to the same facility for postmortem examination.
According to Mr. Birugwomuriwe, the Senke rider had been stopped by a traffic officer at the checkpoint but refused to comply and attempted to make a U-turn. In the process, a speeding box body vehicle carrying bags of groundnuts from Ntungamo to Kabale tried to avoid the Senke but crashed into the Bajaj boxer ridden by Ezra and his passenger. The truck then veered off the road and fell into a roadside trench, injuring its driver.
By press time, the traffic police had yet to issue an official statement. They were in the process of towing the wreckage of both motorcycles and the truck to Rubaare Police Station for inspection.
