KAMPALA
Security personnel at Parliament on Tuesday morning reportedly denied access to a crew from NTV Uganda and confiscated their accreditation press tags.
The journalists, who had arrived to cover parliamentary proceedings, were reportedly stopped at the entrance and informed that they would not be allowed inside.
According to the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, the incident followed reports aired by NTV about “unopposed candidates” in parliamentary leadership, including the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
“Information reaching us is that the leadership of Parliament is angry because of the stories NTV has been running about ‘unopposed candidates’… What a shame! Journalism is not a crime,” Ssenyonyi posted on his official social media platforms.
By press time, Parliament’s Directorate of Communication and Public Affairs had not issued an official statement on the matter.
Jurnalists and media freedom advocates have condemned what they describe as growing intolerance toward the press, especially during political seasons.
Uganda will on January 15, 2026 go on polls. Long serving President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is among the contenders seeking a 7th term after ruling the country for almost 40 years.
