Police in Mubende District have arrested the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate for Kasanbya county MP seat, Peter Kyagela for allegedly forging and uttering false documents during the parliamentary nomination exercise at the Electoral Commission (EC) offices.
Kyagela, a resident of Bubanda Village in Mubende District, was arrested on Thursday (October 23), after presenting a forged payment receipt while seeking nomination as a National Unity Platform (NUP) parliamentary candidate.
According to preliminary police findings, Kyagela presented a general payment receipt purportedly in his name. However, EC officials discovered that the same receipt number had already been issued to and paid for in the name of his opponent, Daudi Kabanda, of the NRM party.
Wamala Region Police Spokesperson, SP Racheal Kawala, confirmed the arrest, saying Kyagela was immediately detained at Mubende Central Police Station to assist with investigations.
“Our investigations so far indicate that the suspect knowingly presented a falsified payment receipt to the Electoral Commission during his nomination process,” SP Kawala said.
“The exhibit has been recovered and attached as evidence as inquiries continue.”
She added that police are collaborating with the EC to verify the authenticity of other documents submitted during the nomination process.
“We remind all aspiring candidates to follow due process and avoid acts of forgery, as the law will take its full course,” SP Kawala cautioned.
