The National Executive Committee of opposition NUP has on Friday passed a resolution to recall former leader of opposition, also the Nyendo-Mukungwe legislator, Hon. Mathias Mpuuga from his parliamentary commissioner job on accounts of corruption, dishonesty and abuse of office.
Mpuuga is accused alongside other National Resistance Movement (NRM) parliamentary commissioners of illegally allocating to themselves Shs1. 7 billion as a “Service Awards” which the NUP says it’s misuse of taxpayer’s money.
The accusations come into limelights following a social media campaign dubbed #UgandaParliamentExhibition in which a group of concerned citizens on the Internet took on the role to expose corruption practices in parliament. During the exhibition, it was established that the former LoP Rt. Hon. Mathias Mpuuga was fraudulently allocated Shs500 millions allegations receipt of the money which he previously admitted to.
His party previously requested him to explain his involvement in these grave actions and demanded him to resign from his current position as parliamentary commissioner something which he swore to heavens that he will not do.
The party NEC once again requested him to give explanations why he should not be recalled from the parliamentary commission but he neither according to the party provided any satisfactory explanation for his actions nor did he make attempts to respond to the accusations brought against him.
In a NEC meeting held today (Friday 15 March), it was resolved that Mpuuga be recalled from the parliamentary commission with immediate effect.
“In light of this, NEC has resolved to recall Hon. Mathias Mpuuga from parliamentary commission on account of corruption, dishonesty, and abuse of office and to notify the parliament of the same,” read a statement by Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru, acting NUP President and deputy president of NUP for Northern region.
Mpuuga will be replaced with the Mityana municipality MP, Francis Zaake Buteebi who previously held this position and was removed from this role in March 2022 following misunderstandings with the speaker of parliament, Annette Anitah Among when he allegedly questioned fraudulent delings of the parliamentary commission.
The party further said they will initiate the relevant processes to effect this resolution as soon as possible.
