KAMPALA
Season three of the Nyakasura Alumni League is set to kick off this Sunday (9th March 2025) at Old Kampala Playground, marking the return of the Commandos in the City.

According to Joel Bbala, the president of the Nyakasura Alumni League, three additional teams have joined this season, bringing the total number of registered teams to 14. However, only 11 teams have been confirmed for the third season.

“Season three of our league is special because more teams have joined. The new teams include Amaraidi SC, Byaaro FC, Manyindo FC, and Cyber FC, the youngest cohort,” he said.

“The addition of more teams means more match days, more games, and thus, more competition, excitement, and fun,” he added.

The Nyakasura School Alumni League began in 2023, following a grand opening gala in Fort Portal in 2022. Bbala believes the league is progressing well, pointing to its growth in several areas.

“The league has seen tremendous growth in almost all aspects: financially, in the number of teams, and in overall participation. When the league started, we had nine teams, and now we boast 14 registered teams,” he explained.

“It is also bringing alumni together, which is the most important goal of the league, as it emphasizes ‘sports as a modern networking tool,'” he added.

The alumni hope that the network built through the league will serve as a valuable resource as Nyakasura School prepares to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026.

However, Bbala acknowledged that there is still work to be done in convincing senior alumni to embrace the league, though he remains optimistic about its future.

“The league hasn’t yet attracted the older cohorts, where most of the prominent alumni belong. Our oldest cohort is from 2003-2008, but since the league is still young, we remain hopeful for the future,” he said.

“Every alumnus of the school is welcome to join the league as we grow it together,” he added.

As season three kicks off on Sunday, all eyes will be on defending champions, Sports Club Calwel, who defied the odds to win the championship in their debut season last year.

Calwel enters season three — their second in the league — still looking fresher and fitter than any other team. However, new arrivals Cyber FC will be eager to make their mark, hoping to emulate the defending champions in their maiden clash with the established teams.

Several teams that struggled in previous seasons have significantly strengthened their squads. Engogo FC, in particular, has already sent shockwaves through the league with their impressive pre-season activity.

The Banana Fibre Generals have signed three exceptional talents from Sports Club Rugumayo, and their veteran players, including Birungi Christopher (Dinho), have reaffirmed their commitment.

After falling short in the first two seasons, Nyanda FC will be aiming for redemption. They will rely once again on Noel Kagezi for goals, Peter Mugisa for defensive stability, and squad depth from their new signings.

Tinapa and Banyunye will be out to prove that age is just a number. Both teams have sent warning signals to anyone who doubts them, and with their strong squads, they could surprise if they maintain fitness and resilience.

The return of Amaraidi, Byaro, and Manyindo is a significant boost. Their absence last season had some neutral fans questioning the league’s appeal. These teams are known for their talented players and passionate fanbases, whose presence will add more excitement to the competition.

Blast Furnace, the inaugural winners of the league, lost the trophy by narrow margins last season — something they will be eager to avoid this time around. As usual, they will turn to Deus Katuramu for goals, Benjamin Nyakoojo for a solid defense, and the arrival of Thembo Joward Matic from SC Rugumayo to further strengthen their squad. With their unmatched solidarity, they will look to reassert their dominance.

Last season’s giant killers, Enkaito FC, are set to enter season three as one of the fan favorites — and they look stronger tha
