KAMPALA:
The parliament of Uganda has on Tuesday passed a motion to commend works of Rotary International in the country.
The motion was moved by the government chiefwhip, Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, also the Ruhinda North county MP, Mitooma district.
The motion seeks to commend Rotary, and Rotary Clubs in Uganda for the outstanding achievements in all the seven Rotary areas of focus.
Earlier on Tuesday, the speaker of parliament Rt Hon Jacob Oulanya had a meeting with the President of Rotary, Shekhar Mehta.
Oulanya thanked Rotarians for being available and providing crucial services to the vulnerable people in Uganda and around the world.
During the debate on the motion to commend the work of Rotary, a section of legiators urged citizens to join different Rotary clubs noting that the clubs help in service delivery in their communities.
Dr. Lillian Aber, the Kitgum district woman MP commended Rotary Uganda and pledged total support for her district.
“We are really proud of ROTARY club for the amazing work they do for this country, we thank the president Mr.Shekhar Mehta & the wife Rashin, as Parliament and the people of Kitgum will always support your work. Uganda is truly blessed, we shall always strive,” she said.
The Kayunga district woman MP Hon. Erios Aidah Nantaba suggested that a total of UShs 200,000 be deducted from each legislators monthly salary to support rotary activities in the country.
However, her submission rose to a clamour with many voices in the house expressing displeasure in her suggestions.
The Rotary club of Kampala was chartered by the Rotary International(RI)- as club No. 17287, on 20 May 1957.
The club owes its founding to the Rotarians in Nairobi who as far back as 1946, tried to establish a club in Kampala.
As of September 2021, the club has expanded to over 400 other clubs across the country (Rotary districts).
In Uganda, Rotary is engaged in various social and economic activities especially in the less privileged communities providing social services such as healthcare, education, safe water, leadership skills to mention but a few.
