Accusations of police harassment have emerged as Molly Katanga awaits a verdict on her bail hearing. Godfrey Kamuntu, one of her sureties, has accused the police of harassment during her hospitalization at IHK. The other sureties for Molly Katanga include her nephew, Dr. Patrick Kabayo, retired civil servant; State Minister for Health Margaret Muhanga; Rtd. Gen. Emmanuel Burundi Nyamwanisa, a farmer and her cousin; and businessman Geoffrey Kamuntu.
In response to claims by the DPP that he obstructed police duties while Molly was hospitalized, Kamuntu submitted a sworn affidavit denying these allegations. He stated that the police were in control of Molly’s hospital visits and had a police visitor’s book for recording visits.
Kamuntu refuted accusations of obstruction, explaining that he was merely documenting the excessive police presence during Molly’s surgery. He described being physically and verbally assaulted by the police when he declined to hand over his phone or delete photographs taken during the incident.
Kamuntu further highlighted the alleged poor treatment of Molly during her transportation for medical consultations, stating that she was dropped while being carried to the police car. He also mentioned a police surgeon removing Molly’s bandages to verify her injuries.
The case involving Molly Katanga stems from the death of her husband, Henry Katanga, who died from gunshot wounds in November 2023. Molly was later arrested for murder and has applied for bail to receive medical care and prove her innocence. Her bail application follows the release of her daughters and other individuals charged as accessories in the case, after 70 days on remand.
