A shocking incident unfolded in Kampala on October 18, 2024, when a motorist, Mercy Timbitwire Bashisha, allegedly caused an accident and then assaulted a traffic police officer who attempted to stop her.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred at around 11:55 AM when the traffic police officer from Jinja Road Police Station signaled Bashisha, driving a white Toyota Land Cruiser (reg. No. UBM 439T), to pull over. However, she refused to stop and continued driving while using her phone.
The officer eventually caught up with Bashisha at Lugogo Traffic Lights, where she parked her vehicle at the Uganda Manufacturers Association and locked it. When the officer requested her driving permit, Bashisha allegedly intimidated and assaulted him.
In a disturbing turn of events, Bashisha also confiscated the police officer’s EPS gadget and two phones. She is currently under detention as investigations into the incident are ongoing.
SP Micheal Kananura the community liaison officer and PRO under the directorate of traffic and road safety confirmed her arrest.
