GULU
Authorities have issued a statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the death of Otim Leon Joshua, a 16-year-old student and resident of Customs Corner Cell, Bardeg Layibi Division, Gulu City.
According to police, Otim left home on December 6, 2025, at around 5:00 p.m., informing his mother that he was heading to town. When he failed to return by 11:00 p.m., the family grew concerned. At about 5:00 a.m. the following morning, two boda boda riders brought the teenager home in a critical condition, reporting that he had been assaulted at Lailong after being accused of stealing a mobile phone.
His mother rushed him to St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor, where he was admitted. Despite medical efforts, Otim succumbed to his injuries on December 9, 2025, at around midday.
Police officers immediately responded to the incident, recording statements from the mother and the boda boda riders. Investigations have since revealed that Otim, a student at Exel High School in Mukono, had returned home for the holidays. He was allegedly attacked by four boys who remain at large. Efforts are underway to apprehend the suspects.
Authorities strongly dismissed claims circulating on social media suggesting that Otim’s death was linked to a scuffle involving security agencies and opposition leader Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi. “These allegations are false and baseless,” the statement read. “The truth is that Otim Leon Joshua died from injuries inflicted by individuals who suspected him of theft.”
Police assured the public that investigations are ongoing and pledged to pursue justice for the deceased and his family.
