KAMPALA

Traders in Kalerwe, Kampala, on Tuesday rescued a child from his mother, who allegedly tried to kill him by placing him under vehicle tyres before fleeing the scene.

The child’s mother, identified only as Nakamya, is said to have first attempted to throw the child into a drainage channel, but failed after she noticed that some people were watching her. She reportedly shifted and placed the child beneath car tyres in the waiting vehicles along Kalerwe junction traffic lights with the intention of ending his life.

The baby was however rescued by alert traders who intervened quickly before he could be harmed.

Nakamya, however, escaped and is currently on the run. The child was handed over to Kalerwe Police, who have launched a manhunt for the suspect.

Emmanuel Lutaaya, a trader who was among the rescuers told reporters that the woman’s suspicious behavior drew attention, prompting traders to act swiftly.

Police have confirmed investigations into the incident and assured the public that efforts are underway to track down the suspect.

Rebecca Nzabyake requested police to release the child into her care, but authorities declined, saying investigations are still ongoing into the whereabouts of the suspect and the child’s father. Police further noted that if the suspect is found to be suffering from mental illness, she will be referred to Butabika National Mental Referral Hospital for treatment.
