Two National Water Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) staff Eng. Francis Bbaale, the water network manager at NWSC Bwaise branch and Samuel Mutyaba are among the victims of yesterday’s fatal accident at Kyoja in Lwengo district, traffic police reported.

Yesterday, 7th.April 2023, at about 1600/C a fatal accident happened at Kyoja Trading Centre along the Masaka-Mbarara highway, claiming lives of nine people on spot.

According to Faridah Nampiima, the spokesperson Traffic and Road Safety Directorate, the accident involved two motor vehicles registration number UBL 314C an Alphad, that was traveling from Kampala side heading to Mbarara and motor vehicle reg no SSD 327S/SSD 137Q that was from Mbarara/Kinoni town.

It is alleged that the Alphard driver was at high speed and was keeping right, when she had a head on collision with a fuel tanker.

All occupants of the Alphard vehicle including seven adults and two juveniles died on spot while the tanker driver and his turn boy sustained injuries and we’re rushed to Masaka referral hospital before being transferred to Kampala hospitals.

Police found difficulties to identify whereabouts of the deceased since only a National ID and Driving Permit of the driver, Mercy Nakaweesa was found in the vehicle

Latest from police however, indicates that the deceased have since been named.

They are Mercy Nakaweesa (the driver), her husband Eng. Francis Bbaale, Samuel Mutyaba, Wycliff Kabugo a brother to Nabaweesa, Joseph Sserunkuma a neighbour to Bbaale, Chris Ntege an engineer with Uganda Breweries Ltd and his wife Cindy Butesi. The two juveniles have been identified as Jaiden Ntege, Jiana Ntege, both children of the Ntege family.

Yiga Bawakaana, a relative to Eng. Bbaale said the deceased were travelling to Isingiro district to celebrate Easter holidays with Ntege family

“Ntege was a close friend of Bbaale. He moved with his family in their car from Mbalwa in Kira Municipality and drove to Bbaale’s home in Kawanda where he left the car. Both families chose to travel in one car, but unfortunately, they never reached their destination,” he said.

Police attributed the cause of accident to overspeeding cautioning road users travelling upcountry for Easter festives to maintain discipline on the road
