President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has reiterated his commitment to free Universal Education as the cornerstone for eradicating illiteracy and fostering national development. Speaking at the International Day of Education celebrations at Kololo Independence Grounds, the President emphasized the importance of accessible education for all Ugandans, particularly the underprivileged.
President Museveni highlighted the historical challenges Uganda has faced due to limited access to education during colonial times, which he believes left the nation vulnerable to exploitation. He stressed that widespread education and technological advancement are essential to overcoming these historical injustices and achieving meaningful progress.
The President criticized public school administrators who impose fees on students, describing such practices as detrimental to the aspirations of children from poor families. He noted that these barriers often lead to high dropout rates, depriving many young Ugandans of the opportunity to build a better future.
In response, President Museveni has championed the establishment of free zonal industrial skilling hubs, which he described as a lifeline for disillusioned youth. These hubs, he said, should serve as a model for free vocational education across the country, equipping young people with practical skills to thrive in the labor market.
The President also urged Ugandans to embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a tool for development, warning against being left behind in the ongoing technological revolution. He called for a renewed focus on science and technology, particularly in the context of AI, to ensure that Africa remains competitive on the global stage.
The event, celebrated under the theme “Promoting an Employer-Led TVET System That Is Functional, Effective, and Efficient to Meet the Needs and Priorities of the Labor Market,” underscored the government’s commitment to aligning education with labor market demands. President Museveni’s vision for free Universal Education and technological empowerment aims to position Uganda as a leader in innovation and sustainable development.
