A private security guard in Bushenyi district has been arrested for allegedly robbing a bar at gunpoint.
Ramathan Kankiriho, a resident of Katooma cell, Ryeishe parish, Ibaare Sub-county in Bushenyi district, and a security guard attached to Blue Water Guard Private Security Company allegedly attacked Baitwababo Godfrey’s bar on February 18 at night, and put his wife, Annet Tushemereirwe and three customers at gunpoint before robbing Shs40,000.
Greater Bushenyi Regional Police spokesperson SP Apollo Tayebwa said officers swiftly responded to information from residents and arrested the suspect. Police said the suspect had initially been subdued and arrested by the bar owner.
Police recovered the alleged stolen cash and the firearm belonging to the private security company.
“The suspect is in police custody and will be charged accordingly upon completion of investigations,” SP Tayebwa said.
Residents described the suspect as a habitual offender, and police have commenced investigations to establish whether he is linked to six other aggravated robbery cases reported in in the area in recent days.
Authorities also warned private security companies against misuse of firearms by their personnel and urged them to enforce strict supervision of guards.
“They risk having their operating licences withdrawn upon recommendation by the District Security Committee if such incidents persist,” SP Tayebwa said.
