After nine years of service, Prof Mohamed Mpezamuhigo’s tenure as the Vice Chancellor of Kampala International University (KIU) has come to an end. The decision was made by the KIU board of trustees not to renew his contract, as he had completed his mandatory two terms, each lasting four years.
In an interview with our reporter, Hassan Basajabala, chairman of the KIU board of trustees, explained that Prof Mpezamihigo had served for a total of nine years due to the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. He was granted an additional year as academic institutions were closed for an extended period. Basajabala also mentioned that a search committee has already shortlisted candidates to interview, and the best candidate will soon be selected to take over the office of Vice Chancellor.
Prof Mpezamihigo confirmed the news, stating that he had handed over the tools of service to Dr. Tom Mulengi, the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of academics. He expressed his satisfaction in leaving KIU at a time when the university is recognized as one of the best in East Africa and Africa.
The new Vice Chancellor is expected to preside over this year’s graduation ceremony in June. As KIU transitions to new leadership, the university looks forward to continued success and growth in the academic field.
