Cases of suicide are on the rise in Rubirizi District, with many linked to domestic violence, financial stress, and family betrayal.
In February this year, 23-year-old Namudu Faridah, who had returned from working abroad, allegedly took her own life after discovering that her family had misused her earnings. They had reportedly deceived her into believing they had purchased land and established a business on her behalf.
Two months later, in April, Moureen Atuheirwe, 31, a businesswoman from Nkondo B Village, Nyakiyanja Parish in Ryeru Sub-county, also allegedly committed suicide by ingesting poison. The incident followed a domestic dispute with her partner, reportedly triggered by financial disagreements.
A similar tragedy occurred in 2019 in Ryeru Sub-county when Hannington Nuwamanya, 32, allegedly threw his three children into Lake Magogo before setting their family home ablaze. He later drowned himself in Lake Kigezi. Sources close to the family said the incident followed a domestic dispute with his wife, Allen Nuwamanya, who had earlier sought refuge at a nearby church after reporting him to local authorities.
