Police in Rukungiri district have arrested a mother and hunting for her husband for allegedly dumping their newly born baby in a pit latrine.
A 19-yrs-old Generous Ainembabazi and her husband, Godfrey Twongyirwe on December 22, 2023, successfully delivered the baby at a hospital in the area.
It is alleged that before birth, the husband’s family had denied pregnancy arguing that Twongirwe was tending to pregnancy that is not his. Further reports indicate that after birth on January 7, 2024, the baby mother was chased from home by her mother in-law who claimed that the child was not their own blood.
Following eviction from their home, the baby mother found the husband at the home of John Bosco Mbyemire, in Kyahi village, Karuhembe Kebisoni where he works as a casual labourer.
She stayed with her baby and at around around 21:00hrs, the husband picked and dumped it in an abandoned latrine belonging to Machati Prutazi, a resident of the same village.
The matter was reported at Mabanga police post by the couple’s host, John Bosco Mbyemire who after becoming suspicious and questioning the mother about the baby’s whereabouts found out that it was dumped in a pit latrine.
“On the 09/01/2024 at around 07:00hrs, John Bosco asked for the whereabouts of the child and when Generous opened up, he reported the matter at Mabanga Police Post for further management,” said ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson.
Police CID , fire and rescue services visited the scene, examined and documented it. The body was retrieved and conveyed to Rwakabengo Health Centre III for postmortem to ascertain the actual cause of the death.
Maate confirmed the arrest of Generous Ainembabazi (Child mother) adding that the search for Godfrey who is on the run continues.
