RUKUNGIRI
Rukungiri district was shaken by a devastating road traffic accident on the night of April 12, 2025, leaving three people dead and several others seriously injured. The incident occurred at around 10:20 PM at Omukiragiro, Buyanja sub-county, along the Rukungiri-Ntungamo Road.
The crash involved two vehicles: an Isuzu bus registration number UBN 331G belonging to Perfect Coaches and a Toyota Hiace taxi registration number UBA 341G. The bus was en route from Rukungiri town to Ntungamo when it allegedly veered off its lane, colliding head-on with the taxi. The impact caused the bus to overturn, while the taxi spun around, facing the opposite direction.
Tragically, three people lost their lives at the scene and the they were identified as Ronald, also known as Kakimpa, a 35-year-old taxi conductor, Liberty Bonance, a 3 year old Congolese national and an unidentified female taxi passenger.
A total of 19 people sustained injuries, including a UPDF officer and civilians. Among the injured was Capt. Musinguzi Bright, S/Sgt. Kwesigwa Edgar, and several others, including Congolese national Pacific Claude. All victims were rushed to Nyakibale Hospital for urgent medical attention.
The driver of the bus is reportedly at large. The scene was promptly attended to by a police team led by SSP Kyangungu Apollo, who conducted a sketch plan and recorded statements. The bodies of the deceased were transported to Rwakabengo Health Centre Mortuary for postmortem, and the vehicles involved are under police custody for inspection.
ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson confirmed the incident and he said the preliminary investigations point to reckless driving by the bus driver as the likely cause of the accident. Authorities are continuing their inquiries to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Maate expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and reaffirmed the police’s commitment to ensuring justice is served.”This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless driving and the importance of road safety measures” concluded Maate.
