The Ugandan ambassador to Iran, Hajji Kasambira Muhammad, has passed away after a long battle with cancer and diabetes. The news was confirmed by Foreign Affairs minister Henry Okello Oryem, who stated that the team is working to repatriate Kasambira’s body for a decent burial.
Kasambira was appointed ambassador by President Museveni in December 2020, following his retirement after serving the Muslim community for many years as secretary general. He was also accredited to several other countries, including Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Palestine, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan.
Kasambira is remembered for creating a parallel Muslim administration in Kibuli in 2009 after falling out with Uganda Muslim council. Despite this controversy, he was highly respected and played a vital role in promoting Uganda’s interests abroad.
The Ugandan government has expressed its deep condolences to Kasambira’s family and friends, as well as the Iranian government and people. The loss of such a distinguished diplomat is a significant blow to Uganda, and his passing will be mourned by many.
