The Salesians of Don Bosco, a renowned religious congregation dedicated to educating and empowering youth, are grieving the loss of their beloved priest, Rev. Fr. Elie Nyandwi (SDB). Fr. Nyandwi passed away on June 1, 2024, at 8:09 a.m. at Tanganyika Care Hospital in Bujumbura. The cause of death is currently unknown.
At the time of his passing, Fr. Nyandwi was serving as the headmaster of Lycee Don Bosco. He had previously served as a missionary in Uganda, where he held various roles, including Rector of Namugongo SDB community, Director of CALM Uganda, and Director of Don Bosco Nursery and Primary School Namugongo.
In a letter dated June 31, 2024, Rev. Fr. Pierre Celestin Ngoboka, Provincial of Africa Great Lakes SDB, requested that the Ngozi SDB community, where Fr. Nyandwi resided, celebrate thirty masses in his memory. He also urged other province communities to celebrate a single mass for the late priest, in accordance with the congregation’s constitution (CF.R. 76,1).
The Salesians of Don Bosco and the entire Catholic Church in Burundi are deeply saddened by the loss of Fr. Nyandwi. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
