Two people were reported dead after a sand mine in which they were excavating sand collapsed and killed them instantly.
The deceased have been identified as; Simon Arinitwe, 24 a resident of Rukaranga village Buranga parish and Edwin Nuwagaba, 30 , a resident of Nyakyonga village both in Kamuganguzi sub county in Kabale district. The incindet ocured today at around 7am in Rukaranga village.
Eye witnesses who hd gone to the mine to excavate sand say two Jackets belonging to the deceased were found hanged near the mine but the owners could not be traced until they realised that the mine had collapsed.
They then alerted their relatives who confirmed that they (the deceased) had gone to the mine to do their day to day business in the early morning.
The Kigezi region police spokesperson, Elly Maate confirmed to this fatal incident.
According to Maate, families of the victims and residents informed police about the matter before they visited the scene of the incident to rescue the lives of the victims.
“That’s when they realised that those two people have been covered with sand and they informed the police for further management” Maate told the press in a statement.
“Our team immediately visited the scene, did the postmortem on site and bodies handed over to relatives for burial” Maate asserted.
This online Newspaper learned that the deceased were carrying out this exercse illegally because the district administration had stopped people from using it as a mean of conserving the environment.
Maate adds that Investigations are ongoing at Kabale Central Police station under Reference no SD 03/31/03/2021.
