Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) scouts and invigilators deployed to invigilate the Primary Leaving Examination exercise have been asked to appropriately support Special Need Education (SNE) and their support personnel to enable them render required support to candidates.
A total of 2,580 candidates with Special Needs Education (SNE) will be sitting for their exams this year, marking a rise compared to the 2,316 SNE candidates in 2022.
Dan Odong, the Executive Director of UNEB told journalists on Tuesday (November 7) that the board is committed to ensuring that these candidates receive the necessary support to create a level playing field.
According to him, this support includes provision of braille question papers and answer sheets for candidates with visual impairments, large print question papers for those with low vision, sign language interpreters for the hearing-impaired, and transcribers for learners with dyslexia and severe physical impairments.
UNEB has also allocated an additional 45 minutes for each paper, allowing SNE candidates ample time to complete their examinations.
“A total of 769 SNE personnel have been deployed across the country to provide the required support for these candidates, ensuring that they have an equal opportunity to excel in the examinations,” ED Odongo said.
PLE exams started yesterday with the briefing of candidates in the afternoon and writing of examination papers started today’s morning with Mathematics exam. In the afternoon, candidates will sit for Social Studies (SST) exam. Exams will end tomorrow (November 9) with Basic Science in the morning and English in the afternoon.
