Police have suspended all business activities in front of the Namugongo Martyrs Shrines ahead of and during this year’s Martyrs Day celebrations on June 3.
The directive was announced during a preparatory meeting held at Namugongo Catholic Shrines and aims to ensure public safety and smooth movement of pilgrims.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Christopher Barugahare, who represented the Director of the Police Operations Services, said vending in front of the shrines has previously caused congestion and disrupted the movement of both people and vehicles, posing a security threat.
“This measure is intended to create order, reduce congestion, and eliminate noise pollution that disrupts prayers,” Barugahare said.
He urged Kira Municipality authorities to stop issuing licenses to vendors in the restricted areas to prevent financial losses and ensure compliance with the directive.
