Police in Mukono, with the support of the canine unit, have arrested two suspects in connection with the vandalism of electricity infrastructure at Azam Construction Company Limited in Buligobe Village, Namawojolo Parish, Nama Sub-county.
According to a police statement released on Tuesday, the arrest followed a tip-off from a security guard at the construction site who discovered that electric cables had been cut. He immediately reported the matter to police and requested canine support.
Police swung into action and arrested two suspects; Mzee Asheraf and Mubiru Geoffrey.
“The Mukono Canine Unit, together with a team of investigators, promptly responded to the scene. After assessing the area, it was deemed suitable for canine tracking,” the police statement read in parts.
Police added that the sniffer dog, Judge, picked up a human scent and tracked it for approximately 300 metres from the crime scene, leading officers directly to the suspects’ residence.
A search of the house reportedly resulted in the recovery of tools believed to have been used to cut electric cables from the pole, shoes containing soil samples said to match those from the crime scene, and other exhibits linking the suspects to the alleged vandalism.
Police confirmed that suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
According to the uganda police annual crime report of 2024, Mukono recorded 2,926 cases of crime in 2024, placing it among the districts with the highest reported crime rates nationwide.
