In an impressive display of mathematical prowess, Atuhaire Irene from St. Helens primary school,the single girl’s primary school in Mbarara city has been crowned the best mathematician in the region, outshining competitors from across Western Uganda in the prestigious National Mathematics Contest organized by the Uganda Mathematics Society (UMS) that were held at Makerere university on 26th July, 2024.
Atuhaire’s remarkable achievement saw her rank first in the Western region and an impressive 16th nationally, earning her a trophy, umbrella, flask, t-shirt, and a National Certificate of Participation.
The contest, which drew participants from various schools across the country, was hailed as a resounding success by UMS contest coordinator, Hassan W. Kayondo, who expressed gratitude to all stakeholders involved.
Atuhaire’s school, St. Helens Primary School, also had reason to celebrate, with Deus Twikiriize, Director of Studies and Mathematics teacher, praising his pupil’s hard work and dedication. “I had trust in my pupils, and they have not ashamed me,” he said, vowing to continue producing top performers.
Sister Macklin Ayebare, Headmistress at St. Helens Primary School, congratulated Atuhaire and the entire school team, acknowledging the vital role of parental support in their success.
The contest’s chief guest, Professor Sunday Okello Angoma from the University of Addis Ababa, encouraged participants to persevere, saying, “At some point, you will also win.”
The Uganda Mathematics Society has pledged to continue promoting mathematics education in Uganda, addressing areas of improvement for future contests.
Atuhaire’s outstanding performance has set a shining example for aspiring mathematicians in Western Uganda, inspiring a new generation of math enthusiasts to strive for excellence.
