The State House of Uganda has asked the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of parliament to recommend parliament write off the loss that was caused by the UPDF soldiers in the 2011/12 FY.
The recommendations follow a meeting involving State House officials and Members of the committee to respond to audit queries.
In a meeting, Lucy Nakyobe, the State House controller who lead officials from the State House revealed plans by the State House to write off Shs590m urging Parliament to also cancel and accept the loss.
It should be noted that in 2011/12FY, Updf soldiers broke into State House Cash store and made off with taxpayers’ money in question.
These later after accessing the money abandoned the guns and uniforms at cash office.
Security traced them and were apprehended with cash exhibits between Shs30m and Shs50m.
They were charged in general court martial and sentenced to 20 years but appealed to court arguing that the sentence was a harsh punishment.
Nathan Nandala Mafabi, the Budadiri West MP who chaired the meeting advised the State House officials to write to the Accountant General and Secretary to Treasury requesting for a write off and they bring the request to parliament for consideration whether to write it off or not.
